Formulas & FAQ
How the average grade formula works
An average grade condenses a list of scores into a single number that represents the whole set. This calculator reports four statistics at once so you can see both the typical result and how spread out the scores are. Every score you enter carries equal weight, which is exactly how a teacher averages a set of equally weighted quizzes, homework assignments, or exam questions.
The mean is the arithmetic average: add every score together, then divide by how many scores you entered. The median is the middle value once the scores are sorted from lowest to highest. When the list has an even number of scores there is no single middle value, so the median is the average of the two central scores. The high and low are simply the largest and smallest scores, and the difference between them — the range — tells you how consistent the results are.
The mean and the median answer different questions. The mean uses every value, so a single very high or very low score pulls it in that direction. The median ignores the size of the extremes and only cares about position, so it stays stable when one score is an outlier. If a class has nine scores near 80 and one perfect 100, the mean rises noticeably while the median barely moves. Comparing the two is the fastest way to spot a skewed set of grades.
Worked example — scores 88, 92, 79, 95
- Sum the scores: 88 + 92 + 79 + 95 = 354.
- Divide by the count: 354 ÷ 4 = 88.50 → mean.
- Sort: 79, 88, 92, 95. Two middle values: 88 and 92.
- Average the middle pair: (88 + 92) ÷ 2 = 90.00 → median.
- Highest is 95, lowest is 79, so the range is 95 − 79 = 16.
| Statistic | Formula | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | (Σ scores) ÷ count | Overall performance when scores are balanced |
| Median | middle value of sorted scores | Typical score when outliers would skew the mean |
| High | max(scores) | Best result and the top of the range |
| Low | min(scores) | Weakest result and the bottom of the range |
To use the calculator, type each score into its own row and add rows as needed. Blank or non-numeric entries are ignored, so you can leave a row empty while you gather the rest of the numbers. Decimals are accepted, which is useful when scores are already percentages such as 87.5. The summary updates on every keystroke, and your list is saved in your browser so it is still there after a refresh. Use the Copy link button to share the exact same list with a classmate.
